About the event

Come and explore Tohunga Mahi Toi, an exhibition by one of Aotearoa’s most celebrated artists, Robyn Kahukiwa.

Robyn Kahukiwa’s artworks have made a difference to Māori. They have provided not only beauty and strength but inroads into our mātauranga, and the multi-layered, inter-generational and ever-evolving stories that are part of our cultural landscape. That landscape is the mainstream of Aotearoa New Zealand. Robyn’s work takes us on circular routes through time, with Māori accounts given proper currency and weight.

The title Tohunga Mahi Toi refers to Robyn’s status and expertise as an artist, valued here and internationally. It is a form of recognition. Robyn has spent all of her adult life as an artist, and one of great distinction. Her work has become an alternate visual rendering of Aotearoa’s history, through the lens of a Māori woman. Like Keri Kaa, Hana Te Hemara, Irihapeti Ramsden and Moana Jackson, her dedication has been unwavering.

Let us acclaim Robyn Kahukiwa. Let us celebrate her art. Let us celebrate the weaving of whakapapa and whānau that she presents us, and entwined with that, always the raising of the wide-reaching capabilities of women. Let us celebrate her gift and her great determination.

Greg Johnson – 30th Anniversary Vine Street Stories

Greg Johnson returns from Los Angeles in April 2025 for a special six-date national tour celebrating 30 years since his landmark album Vine Street Stories.
Johnson and band will perform the album and many more of his fan favourites, live in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga and Palmerston North.
To coincide with the 30th Anniversary, Universal Music NZ are releasing Vine Street Stories (1995) on vinyl for the first time.
Vine Street Stories features many of Johnson’s most enduring radio hits and live favourites, including Don’t Wait Another Day, You Stay Out Of Your Life, If I Swagger, Suddenly Cold, Come On, Let The Sun Beat Down, and Pleasure and Overdose.

Local Manawatū authors Riley Chance, a past Ngaios Best First Novel finalist, and GB Ralph, a Queer Indie Awards nominee, welcome past Ngaios Best Novel finalist Tina Shaw and police officers turned #1 New Zealand Fiction bestsellers ‘the Bookshop Detectives’ Gareth and Louise Ward for a criminally good conversation about the art of storytelling, crafting memorable characters, the impact of setting and real-life issues, and what drew each of them to mystery and thriller writing.

School of Rock

Act Three Productions is ready to rock your socks off with this amazing production of School of Rock!

Tickets starting from $35, we invite you to attend School of Rock at the Regency on Broadway in Palmerston North.

School of Rock is a two-hour, two-act musical (plus intermission), based on the hit movie. The tuner follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn an extra bit of cash by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A pupils into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. But can he get them to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and the school's headmistress finding out?

The stage musical on Broadway and in the West End is produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber, who has also composed 14 new songs for the show, which additionally features all of the original songs from the movie. The composer's numbers "You're in the Band" and "Stick it to the Man" are well on their way to becoming rock solid standards, while the finale with "Teacher's Pet" brings audiences to their feet, eight shows a week.

School of Rock, with its sensational live kids' rock band, is a loving testimony to the transforming power of music. May the spirit of rock be with the schools and community theatres who pledge allegiance to Lloyd Webber's newest hit!

The Firebird will be paired with one-act ballet My Brilliant Career, based on the novel by Miles Franklin, and familiar to many through the 1979 film starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill. The ballet was created in 2023 for Queensland Ballet by UK choreographer Cathy Marston, in demand throughout the ballet world for her imaginative and emotionally compelling storytelling. We are delighted to bring Marston’s work to Aotearoa New Zealand for the first time, and to share her fiercely intelligent, character-driven choreography with audiences who love dance, theatre and a classic coming-of-age story.

Discover the secrets of the Sun!

Sunlight – Ihi Kōmaru offers visitors the chance to get hands-on with Earth’s star at room temperature – no sunscreen required!

From the origins of light in the Sun’s heart to its effects on Earth’s life and cultures, this science exhibition will help the whole family understand the forces that sustain life on Earth – and indeed drive the entire universe.

The journey begins in the gas and dust of the Sun’s formation. Visitors take the role of a photon on its trip through space and can test their speed against a beam of light by racing to the Moon. See how mankind harnesses the Sun’s power in everyday devices and create shapes with RGB colour-mixing lights.

Sunlight – Ihi Kōmaru was developed by Te Manawa Museum of Art, Science and Heritage, Palmerston North.
